Dear List,

I need a little help with a proper attribution; does anyone on the list know who originated the distinction between "listening to the music" (e.g., focusing on its structure, syntax, etc.) versus "listening through the music" (e.g., to the meaning/usage of the music by composers and/or performers, as in Jimi Hendrix's performance of the Start Spangled Banner at Woodstock, to pick a famous and obvious example).

With thanks in advance,
Justin
