If this is the one I think it is,one of the things it points out is that 
paintings sold better the stronger the sense of identity or nationality the 
Dutch had,which would hav influenced the subject matter of the work. I think 
one of the examples given is paintings of long distance passenger boats on 
canals(very big in 16thc Netherlands transportation),how they were modern 
pictures made of the present and did not depend on deliberate referral to the 
past. They were made on spec, as were many 19thc pictures.
