Ok, you're going to do a tv show on the "secrets of genius" and sell it to
sponsors. First, you gotta have celebrities and people of proven success ---
meaning monetized success -- and the two are interrelated before you can
attract advertisers. Then you can have them babble the most insipid
banalities
-- all the cliches everyone has come to regard as their own brilliant insights
and presto, you know the secret to genius. What junk! This only gives further
evidence of the trend away for art as an intellectual and cultural activity to
art as sheer entertainment. I detest the fusion of high and low. The end
result: all low. Genius, creativity, and such approbations are culturally
constructed terms to honor the best practitioners in varied fields. The genius
is simply one who matches the cultural template and when that template is
itself
defined by entertainment values, the gig is up. Our culture is in steep
decline. Rather, I should say our pan-cultural visuality is in decay. A new
vision of culture is emerging (as it is always evolving) and its geniuses look
like dopes and misfits, failures, cranks and crackpots, when measured by
today's
cultural template.
