It's really a shame that the list has dwindled to these quotations without 
comment.  It reminds me a little of Orwell's Animal Farm.

In another way, Whitman was right about the importance of audiences. The 
beholder does in fact create the artwork in experiencing it and it is a private 
'dream'.
