Wednesday 10th October 2012
16:00 - 18:00 | Senate House, room 243
Malet Street, London WC1E 7HU
Anthony Savile (King's College London)
Kant, Purposiveness and the Point of Poetry
Kantbs account of the beautiful aims to secure the truth-aptness of our
aesthetic judgments. His appeal to purposiveness is to do that by
underpinning their universality and necessity. But what does it come
to? And how is it related to the opaque idea of the harmony of the
cognitive faculties in free play? No one has a convincing account of
that (not even Kant). Yet free play of imagination and understanding is
unmistakably related to his idea of our experiencing the natural world
non-cognitively in relation to ourselves, enriching its inert mechanism
from the resources of our own subjectivity. A major task for the poet
will be to cultivate that resource by creating for us a second nature
out of the material provided by actual nature. The desiderated
universality and necessity must be located there, if anywhere.
The talk will be free and open to all. For more information please
