The journal has been published from 1989 under this title and its origins reach back to 1960 when it was first established by professor WEadysEaw Tatarkiewicz under the title "Estetyka", and continued through the following decades as "Studia Estetyczne". The journal explores vital problems concerning the ontological and epistemological status of the work of art, the aesthetic experience, art criticism, interpretation and philosophical problems connected to everyday aesthetics, the museum, perception, symbol, and meaning.B We have had the pleasure to publish original texts by several leading contemporary philosophers of art and researches in aesthetics. The theme of the next issue, to be published in December 2014, is related to the problem of inspiration in the context of undergoing changes in the understanding of art, from the philosophical perspective.B We are proposing an inquiry if there is a possibility for a redefinition of any of the traditional notions of artistic or creative inspiration, rooted in antiquity, Amour Courtois and il Dolce Stil Nuovo, as well as in its a rebours return in the Romanticism and Art Nouveau, followed by scarce though significant input of the twentieth century thinkers, in such a way as to see it at work and relevant to art nowadays. We are asking if marginalisation of the creative and aesthetic elements in art, hyper-conceptualisation of artistic practices as well as contextualisation and conversion of art into an instrument of social engagement, is capable of allowing a space for reference to a transcendent element of a certain kind, or, must art be total(ising), self-explanatory and self-sufficient. Another approach to the problem may suggest that such an external reference is already at play in the contemporary artistic practices, only it operates in an obscure and difficult to define manner.B If so, what is the mechanism of reference to an "external" source of inspiration, how does it operate in contemporary artistic practices/creative processes?B Does it have the potential to grow into a disclosed and consciously explored, or even dominant, factor shaping the direction of change in the arts?
