He was born January 14, 1932 to Lee C. and LuRee Bateman Brown in Iowa and raised from age 9 in Holliday, Utah. After serving in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War, Lee graduated from the University of California, Berkeley and earned his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. He taught philosophy at Ohio State for four decades, becoming professor emeritus in 2002. Known internationally in the field of aesthetics for his erudite writings on music and the co-editor of a widely used textbook, he also wrote a column b Jazz Notesb and reported on the local jazz scene inB The Other PaperB for 15 years. He leaves his wife, Emily Foster, his son Evan (Laura) of Red Wing, Minnesota, two brothers, Wilson (Darleen) of Rexburg, Idaho, and David of Salt Lake City, Utah and a niece, Melissa, plus numerous former students, colleagues, friends and jazz brethren in the U.S. and abroad.
