A collaboration between the London Aesthetics Forum at the Institute of Philosophy and theCentre for Research in Philosophy, Literature and the Arts at the University of Warwick. This workshop is made possible by generous support from the British Society of Aesthetics.B The New Philosophy of Photography 13th-14h February 2015, Senate House, London (Deller Hall) http://bit.ly/philosophyphotography This event is free and open to all but registration is required viaB our website This workshop brings together philosophers and theorists from the UK, USA,B Canada, France, Belgium and Germany to discuss recent developments in theB philosophy of photography. Over the last few years, philosophers have belatedlyB begun to consider the challenge that artistsb use of photography may present forB standard philosophical conceptions of photography as a bpurely causalb processB ensuring bbelief independent feature trackingb or bnatural counter-factualB dependenceb of photographs on what they are photographs of. These challengesB can no longer be accommodated by ad hoc extensions to existing theories, or byB treating artistic uses of photography as a special case. Moreover, it is not onlyB philosophy that is implicated by taking photographic art seriously: such core artB theoretical notions as bindexicalityb are similarly put into question. This workshopB considers philosophersb attempts to address such problems to date, and asksB whether a fundamental re-conception of the field is now required.
