Yeah, we had to do a CPU out of TTL as well. Huge state machine to decode the microcode list etc. At least it demystified CPUs for me. My mistake was using PROMs to hold the microcode decoder logic. One time burnable. Other guys used EPROMS and some even used GALs or PALs. We all had to pick a flavor and in my stupidity I picked PROMs...
