We make them all the time for running our sites in portable generator..

We leave the generator running with the “transfer switch” If power comes back, 
we use it and the site doesnt shut off when generator runs out of gas

I actually made one a few months ago.  A cheap outlet strip, perhaps from FS 
and a relay from digikey.   Added a power cord.

First time we use an Eaton UPS bypass...we had to open it to replace short 
power cable with an 8 footer.
