I had one of these running for a couple of years. However, the SmartThings of the world have kind of passed them by in my opinion. They are an open source platform, but I don't think a lot is being developed on it anymore.
Anyway, they talk about the Vera platform being able to integrate to any home automation standard, including devices that run on Wifi rather than Z-wave or Zigbee. It even integrates to X10 if I remember correctly. They run the AP to be able talk directly with the Wifi automation devices. I am sure it wouldn't really have to be done that way, but that is the way they set it up if memory serves. I would suspect that the AP mode could be turned off, but I always had mine on, it never seemed to interfere with other Wifi in the house. He has a Vera system sitting next to the router, apparently a home security system and/or Zwave or Zigby hub. Can anyone explain to me why these things need to be a WiFi AP?
