I am very happy with my steel building. I use Natural Gas Resnor type of ceiling heaters and evaporative coolers on the roof.
Pole buildings with concrete floors are OK but I am not sure they keep their resale value. I have had pole buildings in the past. You can make them almost as good as a steel building. Make sure your roll up garage doors are extra wide. I made mine too narrow so when we are backing in large equipment we have to be extra careful. Also make sure to have the roof high enough to accommodate the largest piece of equipment you can imagine coming in the door. My doors are 16 or 18’ tall and I frequently have them all the way up. I designed everything so I can take a full size semi and drive it all the way round without turning around. I have a loading dock that I use all the time, so if you are building on a hill, make sure to use the slope to accommodate a loading dock level with the shop floor. I have one door where I can roll out my steam cleaner and clean machinery and hose the gunk down the drive into the gravel area of the drive. Watch your drainage. Don’t want any pools to develop. Put in more electrical power than you will ever think you will need. 3 phase if you can get it for compressors, welders, plasma cutters, larger motors etc. LED high bay lights everywhere. LEDS every where. Lots of lux on the floor and work benches. 500 is a good number for a shop. Double bathrooms in the shop, urinals. I even have a washer and dryer for work clothes. Lunchroom is nice. We have a soda fountain. I have seen some related discussion on the list so interested in any input on particulars of building design that will work best for our uses. Thinking a 60x60 building. Unsure whether "pole barn" style or a steel building. Not sure what's best type of heat in a building with big doors opening occasionally. Any other suggestions or input are welcome.
