We can thank stations like XERF  (250 kW Wolfman Jack station) for the need and 
thus the development of QAM by RCA.  They didn’t call it that back then but 
that is exactly what it was.  I never thought of using QAM to make AM using 
class C amps.  It was a brilliant idea but station engineers could not keep 
these things running properly.  It got a nickname of amplifuzz.
