Hot Dip Galvanizing costs me 50 cents per pound. So a 100 lb chunk of pipe
costs $50 more just because of that. Can easily double or triple the cost of
the part.

That's what I'm doing, checking plumbers and local electrical shops. my guy
with the mounts screwed me and didnt show, so I need pipe. The spec sheet on
the vhlp3 says minimum OD 3.5.

I buy water pipe from plumbers because that's what sitepro cuts and sells us
for much more money than the plumbers.

I have used 3 inch (trade size) IMC electrical conduit. It is lighter than
3” rigid and probably stiffer because of work hardening of the steel in the
forming process.

You could also use 3 inch rigid conduit. You probably don’t want to get
aluminum though, it’s got more flex.

If you’re willing to pay for shipping, most of the usual distributors of
tower steel sell galvanized pipe for mounting antennas. The advantage perhaps
being I think the ends are galvanized. I’ve never seen the cut ends rusting to
cause problems, maybe after 50 years it would.

Are you sure 2” pipe or 2-3/8 galvanized fence post wouldn’t be good enough?

If you just need short pieces, you could check with local plumbers and
electricians to see if they have some leftover cut off pieces.

I can get some 3 inch emt probably, not sure the OD on that, I need 3.5 for
some 3' antennas. Would that be rigid enough for that torque? And what is it
made of that it doesnt rust, its steel

It will rust. Not quickly unless you are by the coast. Problem is, it has
a coating that is difficult to remove. Sandblasting is what I use if I have to
use it. You cannot galvanize it unless you remove the coating down to bare
metal. Not sure if it will take paint. Probably if you degrease it pretty
well.

We normally get galvanized water pipe for masts, but the local shop doesnt
have any 3 inch in stock..they have 3 inch black pipe though. Has anybody used
black pipe as a mast before? I'm concerned it will rust out relatively quickly
