Hot Dip Galvanizing costs me 50 cents per pound. So a 100 lb chunk of pipe costs $50 more just because of that. Can easily double or triple the cost of the part.

The advantage perhaps being I think the ends are galvanized. I’ve never seen the cut ends rusting to cause problems, maybe after 50 years it would. Are you sure 2” pipe or 2-3/8 galvanized fence post wouldn’t be good enough? If you just need short pieces, you could check with local plumbers and electricians to see if they have some leftover cut off pieces. Not quickly unless you are by the coast. Problem is, it has a coating that is difficult to remove. Sandblasting is what I use if I have to use it. You cannot galvanize it unless you remove the coating down to bare metal. Not sure if it will take paint. Probably if you degrease it pretty well.
