I wasn’t asking because I wanted to do what you do (shirt slogan? “Don’t do what Ken does”). I was just curious what hardware you use. I don’t like the sounds of just recovering your upfront costs after 2 years………

Most people here say to use Calix. I think that’s an easier decision if you’re going to do it across the board. But my rule of thumb is I want to recover my hardware cost in about 24 months. There’s additional labor cost and shipping or delivery cost on top of the hardware, plus labor to keep them updated, and to replace them if they fail. Plus a certain number we don’t get back, and if we do, they are often not in a condition I’d want to redeploy to a new customer. I assume cable companies have a whole operation to clean up and refurbish cable modems they get back, even to the point of putting them in a new case. Sometimes they are really dirty or the case is chipped, sometimes they reek of someone’s perfume and you can’t stand to be in the room with them. But back to the cost, if I buy a router for a little over $100, I want to lease it for at least $5 a month, and at that I figure I’m just breaking even. I don’t get a really high take rate, so you could argue I’m charging too much. On the other hand my customers are really really cheap, for a couple years I offered a cheapo router for $2 and that didn’t change things much. Unless it’s free, they figure if they buy their own, they will eventually come out ahead. Occasionally I find someone still using a WRT54G.
