I can't imagine ESXi doing software raid. That's not their market and an absolute freaking nightmare (this is coming from someone with a minimal budget!)
Spanning as in raid5 or jbod? Not just no but HELL NO. Performance really isn't a huge factor where you're at, but I have to imagine you want to make sure it stays running. Raid1 is fine, that's more budget friendly. Raid10 is ideal, but that's more disks.
