It's a bit of a throwback in the way it was coded. In the original 3 GHz radios, we had two separate hardware versions. We called one 3.6 (which covered 3.55-3.8 GHz), and the other band was 3.5 (which covered 3.3-3.6).
Now, the clever engineers have designed a single hardware (and antenna system) that spans both.. from 3.3 to 3.9 GHz.
