I think the API basically exposes the CLI in cleaner way. If you can get what
you need from the CLI, then presumably you can get it from the API too.

Anything done with scripting/programming is more about having the time and
inclination.

Can't you get the dynamic leases through the API?

All I can tell you is our experience with mikrotik dhcp. We have been running
two identical vm's for 10 yrs serving up leases. One main vm does all the work,
we have a script that runs on each lease assignment/deassignment that logs the
mac, ip, and datetime in a log in our IPAM, (phpIPAM) and a script that runs
twice daily to copy the dhcp config, leases, etc to the 'backup' vm. This is a
kludge to getting around the lack of a common lease 'database'. We can swap the
backup vm into place in a matter of minutes should the main one fail. And then
there are the vm backups on top of that.

Currently, it is maintaining 6700+ leases without breaking a sweat.

And on top of that, you have all the convenience of winbox, which has been
invaluable in the day-to-day ops, looking up lease info, client info stored in
comments in static leases, poolinfo, etc.

If Mikrotik would engineer a way to export dynamic leases as well as static, or
set up a db-driven lease system, it'd be perfect.

I wonder if that would be more stable than a simple server or VM running free
DHCP?

How about a cheap mikrotik? We use mikrotik dhcp to manage around 6000 leases
everyday. On a vm of course.

I need to spin up DHCP. Another company I am affiliated with uses DHCPatriot.
No idea why it is better than free DHCP. Any recommendations?
