I have commented on this in the past. Transtector uses components and connectors that are super huge. So huge that the distributed impedance of any normal wire connected to it will limit the surge as much or more than the surge suppressor. In other words, I believe it is overkill. But what is wrong with that? They do work. They look cool. My devices are sacrificial devices. Frequently they will explode if a really good surge hits them. But they always protect the equipment. I would imagine that Transtectors don’t explode or offer visual evidence that they may be wounded. Still, can’t say anything bad about them. They are the name brand. Transtector has a bigger board with more shit soldered to it. Maybe more is more. I don’t know, I’m not the electrical engineer. I do know it’s the “name brand” and you won’t get in trouble with any tower owners or R56 police. When something blows up they’ll say “well this guy had a transtector so he did his best”. If you have the MTC which may or may not be equivalent they’ll say “hah, that’s the problem! Look at this weird brand of surge protector he used! This guy sucks, he should have bought a Transtector!”. I have no idea, but if I was McCown I would never directly say that a Transtector was better than my own product. If I honestly thought mine was better I’d say it loud and proud. If I was Transtector I’d make all kinds of subtle aspersions about my lower cost competitor to imply that they were cheap junk. But only if I was directly asked about them, otherwise I pretend they don’t exist. Those of us who only know enough to be dangerous can only draw our own conclusions. I think Chuck should make a surge suppressor line with a 4x bigger board, an aluminum housing, and a few extra diodes to take up the extra space. Set the MSRP on that to $20 less than Transtector and label it as “MTC Premium Super Turbo 9000 Surge Suppressor” with a little explosion tag on the advertising saying “Compare to Transtector!” Now people will ask Transtector about MTC and they will have to come up with an official opinion. Every time they talk about you they drive people to look at you. Ever heard the story about Martha Stuart selling homemade pies at a booth for $5? She barely sold any. So she raised the price to $10 and sold out in a couple of hours. Apparently nobody wants $5 homemade pies. They want $10 hand-crafted small-batch artisanal organic pies. MTC needs some artisanal, organic surge suppressors. Look at me. I should be in marketing. I’m awesome at this. I’m getting ready to test some Tarana gear. They recommend a Transtector 1101-1110 for surge suppression on the DC line. I recognize that Transtector is exceptional, but I’d like to know if it is significantly better than the MTC DC surge suppressors like the 800-DCSS-APC or 800-DCSS-AB-APC. I’m not necessarily looking to save $150 (Although that is very nice), I’m more interested in the form factor and how the MTC units will work better in our small enclosures.
