I'm not sure what Twitter really ever was or is. It's a great place for small messages...like a BB...but that's for the people with more time than me to experience.
Why people thought it was free beforehand (don't forget Trump was explicitly banned - a President of the United States, agree with him or not, he had that position) is just simply stupidity. Facebook isn't free speech either. They're platforms with terms of use.
