They are not the same. They may have been marketed as such, but have different payload capacities, interior, etc. Only thing that is really the same is the frame and some of the body. I have driven both and if you think that a tacoma is a good work truck after you drive a hilux that would costs significantly less there would be no question of the one you would want. If it weren't for the light duty truck import tax we would likely be able to get a diesel hilux for less than 35k. It would be hard for you to get a base line tacoma for that. I wouldn't trade my F350 in for one, but I'd definitely have one rather than trying to get an all wheel drive maverick hybrid for a daily driver.

They seem pretty cool. Might make a decent install truck if
        your not in the mountains.

I was reading about the new Toyota Hilux Champ the other day.
I really want one, but not likely we will see them in the US.
Its really a shame that we can't own these trucks just so we
could keep our monopoly on chicken in Europe. You know if a
politician wants my vote they can run on the platform of
allowing the import of Toyota Hilux trucks.

Great to carry some people/tools (cheap!).  Terrible if you

I’ve seen some Ford Mavericks on the road but they don’t

looks like you can get as much or more in the bed of one
            of the little kei trucks.

They're super cool toys, there's one around here locally
that shows up at the car shows all the time.

Anybody using a kei truck in your business?  Which
                one, and for what?
