My first tower in 2003 had one of those Alvarion APs. Split system IDU/ODU
with a 2.4 omni. Didn’t survive the first lightning storm, even though we had
the coax lightning protectors. Ironic because one of the advantages of running
IF frequency + DC power over coax to the ODU was supposed to be lightning
survivability. We also had 6 x Trango 5830 APs and those survived.

We never hooked up any customers off the Alvarion system but I must have had at
least one CPE radio because I remember driving around doing surveys from the
van. At the time we were part of a groups of WISPs that could install
customers off each others towers and split the revenue, one of the requirements
was to have at least one of the Alvarion APs.

Im not sure what he was happy about, Im not a junker, but apparently they had
value

The alvarion gear was really lucrative for him I remember. the housing was some
valuable grade aluminum if the paint was off. I assume h ended up burning the
paint off or something, but he drove all that direct to a smelter i remember
him saying, and that wal like 150 miles away. that was like 6 or 700 radios.
That pile hurt feelings because it wasnt til the end we had got those
subscribers down to like 700 bucks a piece. That was a million dollar pile with
the APs

:)

we still have like 3 900mhz customers across 2 APs that wont die and cant be
otherwize converted. Those FSK radios are resilient

Hell, we have one 2.4.fhss Alvarion BreezeAccessII in the air serving one
customer 1.2mbps. We dont even have the tools to do the RG58 cable on those
anymore. the customer is happy, and we told him 10 years ago we can only serve
him til his radio or the AP die. they just wont die

Yesterday going through spare SMs I found a NIB 900 MHz PMP100 SM. I suspect
we have a few used ones around along with Yagis, but this one was still in the
box, never deployed. Oh, well.

orig coverage area. they were customers since 2013. still on a 3 meg plan.
