It's a form of cognitive dissonance.
Cognitive dissonance is the mental stress or discomfort experienced by
an individual who holds two or more contradictory beliefs, ideas, or
values at the same time, or is confronted by new information that
conflicts with existing beliefs, ideas, or values.
An example of this paradigm is when a cult-like group had predicted when
and where the world would end due to an alien invasion. When this of
course didn't happen they experienced extreme cognitive dissonance.
Despite believing the prophecy had failed they believed the aliens had
given mankind a second chance.
