I'm puzzled at the common assumption that people are Republicans or =
Democrats, as if they carry membership cards, or look different. I =
realize many states are "party registration" states where you register =
to vote with a party affiliation, or else Independent or Unaffiliated. =
I don't live in a party registration state, the only time I get asked =
for a political party preference is if I want to vote in a primary and =
it's just for that one ballot. If someone asked me what party I belong =
to, I would not know how to answer. I've voted both ways through the =
years, sometimes differently in local, state and national elections. =
And the idea that some party "owns" me seems kind of repugnant.

=E2=80=9CThe Democrats seem to be basically nicer people, but they have =
demonstrated time and again that they have the management skills of =
celery. They're the kind of people who'd stop to help you change a flat, =
but would somehow manage to set your car on fire. I would be reluctant =
to entrust them with a Cuisinart, let alone the economy. The =
Republicans, on the other hand, would know how to fix your tire, but =
they wouldn't bother to stop because they'd want to be on time for Ugly =
Pants Night at the country club.=E2=80=9D

"Cult" is a very apt term.

We should stop calling them =3DE2=3D80=3D9Cparties=3DE2=3D80=3D9D =
because none of them =3D are much fun. Elephant and donkey are apt =

By SHANE GOLDMACHER The New York Times=3D20

One longtime Democratic researcher has a technique she leans on when =
nudgin=3D g voters to share their deepest, darkest feelings about =
politics. She asks =3D them to compare America's two major parties to =
animals.=3D20

After around 250 focus groups of swing voters, a few patterns have =
emerged,=3D said the researcher, Anat Shenker-Osorio. Republicans are =
seen as "apex pr=3D edators," like lions, tigers and sharks =
=3DE2=3D80=3D94 beasts that take what the=3D y want when they want it. =
Democrats are typically tagged as tortoises, slug=3D s or sloths: slow, =
plodding, passive.=3D20

So Shenker-Osorio perked up earlier this year when a Democratic man in =
Geor=3D gia suggested that a very different kind of animal symbolized =
his party.=3D20

"A deer," he said, "in headlights."=3D20

The man had more to say.=3D20

"You stand there and you see the car coming, but you're going to stand =
ther=3D e and get hit with it anyway."=3D20
