Cambium came out with their own Stinger-like device for the 5 GHz 450 SMs
called a CLIP. It was actually pretty good, except the initial production had
a disc with the Cambium logo that was just held on with a squirt of glue and
after a few months outside they would fall off.

The CLIP was not a Stinger clone, it was more like a horn. The inside of the
plastic was sprayed with a conductive film. It did not use passive coupling or
coax.

I have to imagine a passive coupling isn't anywhere near as efficient as a
soldered joint. Like wireless charging of ~20 watts versus USBC 240 watts.

I am nostalgic about Stingers.

I wonder why more of the WISP radio vendors weren't on board with passively
coupled antennae for subscribe units. I don't hate coax connections, and
obviously we used them sometimes, but the seals around bulkhead connectors were
sometimes a weak point for water intrusion. And weather proofing coax
connections was added labor, added mess, and added chance for error.

the 2.4 stinger is how i found out wbmfg was a solid company. I didnt know shit
back then. I put one on expecting massive numbers and just wasnt seeing much
(turns out i was seeing what I was supposed to). I called about it, you almost
beat me up through the phone trying to get the units back to get on your bench
to figure out what was wrong with them and had already shipped replacements

Today we took down a long dead Cambium 9000APC from a tower. I looked at it
and went “what is that”? The antenna was a KPP sector and I was expecting the
AP to be attached to the back of the sector.

I had forgotten that the FSK APs looked just like SMs. I guess partly because
I mostly deployed Cyclones.

I do remember the 900 MHz SMs with Chuck’s Stingers on top, connected with a
coax cable.
