If it's like Tesla, then the front and back axles are not connected at all. Plus it can't "select a lower gear" because there is only one gear, and essentially no transmission(s). That said, it might be able to selectively apply regen-braking to either the front or rear motor (but I'm spitballing that).

I don’t know enough about EVs to understand how AWD would work.  Do they still have differentials, or just a motor at each wheel?
