The irony is that off-net DNS servers produce a worse experience than on-net
ones in all but the most egregious cases.

Probably 10 years ago, I had a 'network guru kid' call and want me to help him
change his DNS servers, because he had just read an article about how his
internet would be a lot faster if he used the Google DNS servers.

Because in this country the ISP is simply evil. There's no logic to it, it's
just a blind opinion.

I'm sure the cellco is doing some sort of inspection/manipulation. But it's
perfectly acceptable if they do it.

The kids with no networking knowledge love these articles and the writers love
the ad revenue.

Why are media people so convinced that ISPs are snooping your DNS queries and
even manipulating DNS to redirect you?

Also the assumption that a small ISP can’t run DNS servers that can handle the
load (it’s not difficult). The only argument I can see is that Google or
Cloudflare has a bigger user base and is more likely to have results cached.

They never seem to offer any evidence that ISPs are actually tracking you
though your DNS queries or manipulating the results, they just assume because
it’s technically possible, it must be happening. Throw in a little “all ISPs
are evil” bias. It reminds me of all the warnings about public USB charging
stations and “juice jacking” despite no actual reports of this happening. --
