Each IP can have multiple probes but each device type has a defined 'set' of probes. But I think what he is getting at is that you can't make a device called SiteMonitor that does everything without having probes that appear down or that have to be manually removed from the device page, so you have to create one for each type of SiteMonitor configuration.
