I did look at the SHOP, it is available to see on the healthcare.gov site now. But under the SHOP, there were not too many plans and the plans which are there are not reasonable. Pre tax? I will have to look at that perspective again.
Before ACA, insurance company had to cover every employee we hire under the group plan, the premium were very high, I could go buy the same plan for 1/3 the cost if I buy as the individual plan. With ACA, now insurance company have to offer plan to everybody so it make more sense now let the employee buy their own plan that meets their needs. I think they offer a SHOP program, starting on the 15th, that you as a business owner can sign up. Don’t quote me, but the way I understand it, it lets you pool everyone together, and then you (the business) pays the premium for all members, you can choose to take it out each person’s paycheck (pretax is the big thing here), or to pay a portion of it etc. Again, don’t know 100% of the details, but that signup starts on the 15th just in case you are interested. We provide up to $100 per month for insurance coverage, we are too small for a group plan and feel like we have to provide something. If you have not looked at it, give it a try and you will be surprised to see the number of options available. Since we are under 50 employees we are not required to offer any plans, I am guessing lot of people on this list will fall under that. Last year in Austin market there were just 2 providers offering plans and none of the plans were reasonable, this year there are lot of plans and some of them are reasonable. Big change in our market for sure. We are just planning to give fixed amount of $$ to each employee every month and let them buy the plan that meets their needs rather than forcing down two plans to everybody. Some of them may qualify for subsidy which they will have to let go if employer offers the plan. Is anybody else planning to do something like this? Are you guys seeing many more options in your market? Thanks, Tushar Patel 512-257-1077 www.westernbroadband.com
