I didn't used to understand why anyone would want to drive a stick... seemed like it was just a lot of extra hassle. but I figured I should get one and find out for myself... now I hate driving automatics.

Probably an attitude that is restricted to people that love the driving thing. Stick shift makes you more "involved". And like you say, it also is a crude form of theft control. Becoming more effective every day.
