Apparently the previous generation XPS series had one of those RJ45 jacks where you flip out the side where the tab latches, but you may be right, this one is just too thin.
Rather than use an active USB dongle, I wish there was a standardized low profile Ethernet connector so you would only need some passive patch cords with the special plug on one end.
