Typesetter and coder slang? Short, easy to say.

. dot
* star
! bang
#! shebang

Why has nobody come up with an abbreviation for :// or http:// (so the
uninformed can stop calling them backslashes). And then there’s dub-dub-dub.

Oh, and while we’re on random grammar topics, I saw an ad on TV today for
Lowe’s paint. “This room is so you, it’s so phisticated.” “Yeah, phisticated.”

Maybe dot is easier to say?

And why is it called a dot?

This is my theory, back when we had analog long distance trunks (single side
band running on open wire on glass insulators, yes I go back that far), we had
to align each channel 4 times a year. Probably took 15 different adjustments
per trunk and we had several dozen trunks. We called it carrier line ups.
Took a Bell guy on the far end and we would swap tones to each other and both
of us would make the same audio and RF adjustments in sync with each other.

So all day long, I would say things like “I am sending –16” and he would say
I am receiving “plus 7.3” but the words were “seven dot two”. I thought it
was odd initially but soon found that the entire telecom world did not say
point when doing decimal. And since the original internet connections were
entirely telecom folks doing the work, I think they are the ones that started
saying dot for IP addresses.

That’s my theory and I’m stickin’ to it.

Nah, it's just a matter of where you put the dots

  815-321-8221
  81.53.218.221

So apparently area codes start at 201 in the US, so I have 54 area codes to
start from.

Yeah I'll see if they're game for that. I would have thought of that myself if
they didn't make me get up at 3am :)

Only a quick suggestion.. on the 2811, setup a /30 or something routable for
testing... plugin directly on that port with IP/gateway and DNS - see if issue
is still there. Then at least you know if it's in the ASA or not....

I have a customer who uses us as a backup path to the internet. They have BGP
sessions with us and another provider, and we just stack a few prepends on the
routes they send us and re-advertise them.

When their primary connection is out, they report having partial connectivity.
We just had a two hour test window where their primary connection was shut off
on purpose so that we could test. The other provider and I spent a ton of time
going over BGP and routing stuff and finally concluded, "gee, it should be
working."

After we gave up looking for a routing problem that isn't there, we did some
more basic testing and really the only thing I can conclude definitely doesn't
work when they fail over to us is DNS. Using nslookup they get no response
from any DNS servers.

They have a Cisco 2811 running BGP, but that connects to an ASA, and everything
on their LAN is behind the ASA.

I asked for copies of the configs on the 2811 and the ASA, but I'm not even
sure what I'm looking for yet. Any brilliant ideas?
