We've seen this happen; upgrading a whack of SMs, and sometimes, one or two don't come back. For us, a reboot brings them back on the upgraded firmware.
Canopy radios are pretty good with firmware upgrades; I think, in, sheesh, 13+ years of dealing with them, I've had exactly one full-on brick. If they're on the bench, just upgrade straight to the latest firmware. If they're in the field, well, Cambium suggests an incremental upgrade. But I know I've done 7.3.6 straight to latest, for various values of 'latest.'
