I used to use mechanical connectors like 3M Crimplok....similar to Unicam.

Do those contain an index matching gel like a mechanical splice does? If so, don't they wear out in a few of years as the gel degrades?

Might look at the "fast connect" connectors, they are mechanical...cheap from China...works very well on 2-3mm. We've used a bunch of them.
