I thought I read in the instructions for some device – probably either Phoenix or Traco – not to tin the ends of stranded wire, you must use ferrules or it will be the end of life as we know it.

Of a pair of channel locks if you must. The ferrules are really just to keep wire strands from sticking out and causing a short and to make reuse easier.
