And another thing: without a steel messenger, is it more vulnerable to being broken? I'm thinking of falling tree limbs, etc.

Ok, so ADSS is in between on price. Much cheaper than figure-8, but similar labor savings.

I was wondering about drop cables though. If I have to cross a couple of poles to get from a closure to the customer premises, I would have no problem lashing the drop cable to a figure-8, but could I lash a few drop cables onto an ADSS without an issue?

Might want to compare figure 8 costs to ADSS as well, the share some of the same strengths and weaknesses. Lashed has the advantage of being able to overlash and do mid-span aerial drops.

So It seems like figure-8 is almost 3 times the cost of a

Seems like you have at least twice the labor in lashed because
you pull the whole length twice. I don't really have a basis for
comparison though. Does anybody have reasonable guesses about
labor hours spent for aerial installation on the two different
    methods?
