Ah, okay, I knew most of it was fine. Just a part of it that wasn't.

I'm not sure why they'd get in trouble for recording. Record whatever you want
in the air as long as it isn't in those analog cell bands.

IIRC they were sniffing for WiFi and recording MACs associated with GPS
coordinates. They could do this with their Google Maps mobiles, but also with
Android phones. Stuff that all into a database, and suddenly you can know
approximately where you are based solely on the MAC addresses of any nearby
WiFi hotspots.

They got in trouble because they also "inadvertently" recorded data traffic
too.

I think all they got in trouble for was checking connectivity on open APs.

I knew about google and apple doing that, but I thought they got in trouble. I
didn't know Microsoft was, it makes senses.
I assume there is no way to see this database?
I need to wrap my house in tin foil now

Based on the wifi access points near you.

When a cell phone sees a wifi network it reports back to a mothership the GPS
coordinates. When your laptop sees the access point the mothership tells it
where you are. Scary eh ;)

I made the plunge the other night to 10, its pretty cool.

Im concerned however that when it asked to use my location its right near me,
on a laptop, not phone, no gps and a clean install. How is it getting this
info?
