Just to add to the calix 844E product you should also purchase the consumer 
connect product to manage the devices.  This will make life a breeze, there is 
a cost savings on your support side when your not having to do un necessary 
truck roles.

You cannot, unless you know someone who has support and is willing to share the 
firmware updates.  Calix support is not cheap either.
