I didn't notice it until you said something, but yeah it would appear to have less strength side to side.

Yes, clever, I do have some concerns about the strength of how the base is formed compared to the typical design. Also the adjustment screw going all the way through the base rather than the typical approach with short carriage bolts that you can really crank down without compressing the J-pipe.
