FYI....

Telco NID's would have grounded surge protector installed in it... So as to 
protect them from surges.

Most likely when you are connecting the ATA to house wiring, you are 
disconnecting it from the NID, and as such removing the surge protections.

You can continue to connect the ATA to house wiring, as long as you install the 
appropriate surge protection on the phone wiring side of the house.. (the key 
here is that ground rod used for grounding the phone line, should also be 
bonded with the ground rod used for electrical ground... if not then you create 
a problem, and take hits every time it rains in hot weather).
