Seems we're having the exact same discussion on the WISPA list....
I have a bunch of standard/non-shielded RJ45s that work on solid or
stranded wire. I don't remember the brand. Those are three prong. The
front and back straddle the wire (for solid) and the middle is a shorter
tooth that punctures the center of the wire (for stranded). That's just
one type. I'm sure there are other 3-prong universal designs.

and bury their nose in amongst the strands.
Solid has multiple offset poky pins that pierce the insulation and

Stranded connectors will work on solid for a few minutes until the
stress of the metal are a bit relieved and the cable gets moved a bit,
they you get intermittent connections. Just wiggle the cable or tug
on it a bit and they will fail.
Solid connectors will work on stranded for a few minutes too maybe.
If they actually touch some conductors they can work for quote some
time but they are luck to touch the edge of a strand or two. They are
more likely to work than Stranded connectors on Solid wire.

very little if any memory. They don't get kinked, they stay
put, and they don't get tangled as easily. When you hang
them on a cable holder, they even hang nice and straight.
I've slowly been replacing all of my test cables with this
type of cable. I'm still looking for a cat5 patch cable
which is of this type. Any ideas where I might find such a
beast?
Oh, and yes, I've looked at those little roll up toys they
sell for travel use. Not really what I'm looking for, just
because of the fragility of the cable and questionable cat5
compliance.
