not very accurate, it's good to within about 2W or so. If you put an old 5V 500mA USB phone charger on a kill-a-watt it will show anywhere from 2.5 to 3.5W, but might show 1W idle when the thing is actually consuming only 0.05W when no phone is plugged into it.
They're much more accurate for things 15W+.
