I think the beauty of Navajo for that purpose was that it was never written down anywhere. No phrase books or dictionary so you couldn't even attempt to learn it.

I wonder what other obscure languages could be used for that purpose.

Why not make up a language, like Tolkeen's Elvish or Klingon. Except don't document it anywhere.

Trying to wrap my head around the difference between a foreign language and a complex cypher.

I wonder if modern technology could crack that. If they were speaking all day about other things, they're providing a large corpus of data. ....though I suppose if software could translate a language then we would have translated the Voynich manuscript by now.

About 30 years ago I worked with a guy whose wife’s grandfather was a code talker. I had never hear of them before. The code talkers all knew each other and in most cases came from the same tribe/area area. Drove the Japanese crazy. All day long they were visiting in Navajo about the cousins back home and then seamlessly insert a code phrase. For words that were not Navajo they use a phonetic alphabet but used Navajo words, so B would be the Navajo word for Bear etc. Then back to speculating if cousin Jimmy is still drinking.
I wonder if they even figured out what language it was in.

        Tough nut to crack.
How about you can send encrypted all you want, provided the
sender and receiver identities are in the clear.
How much would that offend our libertarian sensibilities?
