I've got a Nikon Coolscan that my dad used during the transition from film
to digital.  They do a good job, pretty spendy though.  You should be able
to do basic stuff like you're asking in jpg format, but if you've got the
space and a decent scanner, I would keep a copy in raw format as well -
gives you more flexibility later.
