When we got our appliances they said that they re-encode all of their library once a year to take advantage of new tweaks/efficiencies that their team comes up with over the year. Netflix guys also said they have individual encodings for each stream quality for each “device”, rather than doing it on the fly. So for Daredevil episode 1, they’ll have quite a few files :)
