I'm pretty sure we've done both but can't be positive. For sure we've done bridging.
TDD and Airmax will work better than just wifi. We have been swapping out all Ubnt M5s this way. We'll either start swapping the CPE over time or if an AP fails, we put the AP in wifi mode and then go around and swap CPE. It's been much easier than having to install all new APs, sectors and lines or rush around swapping CPE.
