And those who can’t afford it will have nothing, as the OTA stations auction their spectrum and go off the air. I know it seems archaic, but there was a certain equality when anyone could buy a TV and antenna and get free TV. OK, you had to watch commercials, but you didn’t have to pay a monthly fee. We’re heading toward a world where, as you say, 120 Mb Internet will be table stakes just to watch TV.
I remember in college there was one TV in the dorm, with 50 kids all watching it, and voting what to watch. Again, seems archaic, but it did foster some sense of community. Now college kids can all sit in their rooms watching their individual shows. It may explain a lot about society and politics. Although it’s hardly just the kids who are that way, so my theory about no longer having shared experiences is probably wrong. Still, I’m suspicious that corporate profits and lobbying are behind some of these trends. It is kind of ironic that all the money politicians spend on TV ads may be wasted if no one under 50 watches conventional TV. That’s the main lesson I draw from the whole Trump thing – money to buy TV ads is becoming irrelevant. Kennedy/Nixon supposedly started the TV age in politics (it actually started with Eisenhower), and it may be ending with Trump. This will be the begining of really getting full tv service over the internet. Sling was a good start but if directv has its way who needs satelites or setop boxes anymore. Im not saying they are going away but sooner or later all content is going to be delivered this way. I can just see it now a family of 4 streaming 4 30mb 4k streams on a thursday night 120mb. That will be fun. Craig schmaderer Skywave Wireless, Inc.
