Yes back when you and I were pups in school we learned about atrocities done by conquistadores and yes some zealous Franciscan monks.... they sanitize it down now in history books...if are a native American, Columbus and the rest that followed are exactly heroes in their eyes...same for Pilgrims in east and later expansion west by Americans....hell we still treat them poorly in many areas....we practically eradicated them....this is not taught in depth anymore.
