I did not know the story, but heard an interview with Ken Ono (a mathematician who was a technical consultant and associate producer for the movie). I was wearing my FM hearing protectors while mowing the grass, so I may have missed some of the details. None-the-less the story was fascinating.

They are still trying to figure out some of his formulas today. A truly amazing story about a man with minimal formal education could create formulas and theories that people are puzzling about today; decades later.
