How about filling a garbage bag full of acetylene like a balloon? That's good for a mushroom cloud and a few hours of tinnitus if you were close when it went off. My welder/mechanic friends were setting those off as pranks at one point to wake up napping truck drivers. After one buddy burned himself badly filling a bag (static in the bag set it off) they finally stopped doing that one.
